I’ve had writers block for some time. I’m terrible at blogging, but actually really love to document. Especially when there is something so significant to share. This captured day is very near and dear to my heart and I’m thankful for this push to break me out of the shell back into the world of blogging. Anyway…
I wish I could tell the whole story properly, but I fear I would leave out all the important details. So I’ll give a quick backstory and then share yesterday’s event. The Cowdrey family has a heart for adoption. They were called with a baby girl who was in the NICU and a grim prognosis. The doctors weren’t sure if she would even live. She was very early and not the ideal birth story, but she was alive! Brian and Season continued to pray and pray and visit this sweet girl every day in the hospital. See her Facebook page for more of those moments. She had oxygen indefinitely, would possibly be blind, or deaf; nobody could predict what she would need.
They just celebrated her 1st birthday not too long ago. She is thriving! Recently, the doctors told Season and Brian that this sweet girl would not need to wear oxygen during the day, which they were told wouldn’t happen. She would need it her whole life. And while she still needs it during sleep, she isn’t tied to a tank during the day full of crawling, playing and soon to be running! This girls lights UP when she gets to walk along holding hands. So we did just that.
We celebrated before the hearing by taking some family photos. They haven’t been able to post anything on social media due to fostering rules so it was important to get some updated ones for this big announcement. :) And as you can see by the following bunch, this kid is HAPPY!
After lots of fun by the river, we stopped for ice cream at Ozzi’s in Morrison. If you want delicious ice cream from the most kind man ever, go see him. He opened the store just for us as we were hoping for a little cooling off sweet treat. :) He was moved by the eventful day as we shared with him of the joyous occasion.
We headed over to the courthouse for the hearing. As people arrived, it was so neat to sit back and watch the smiles roll in. The excitement was palpable! I’ve never been to an adoption and the event was surreal. So much love!
As people were let into the courtroom to get settled, the Cowdrey family got to sit up in the front along a big table with microphones. Micah soon found that he LOVES speaking in them and addressing the courtroom with his witty charm. He literally had the whole room rolling with laughter and tears. They each got to take turns speaking about what it was like to adopt Abby and the joy they felt in doing this. The advocates and case workers also got to speak on Abby’s behalf in support of her final adoption into the Cowdrey family. It was like something I’ve never witnessed before. As Season says it best, “My heart was bursting!”
I sort of found the sign a little comical with the fun that ensued behind these doors.
Right away, Micah began to share and get comfortable speaking on the microphone. He was a natural. It’s fun to imagine what this kid will do some day. He’s an old soul trapped in a 4 year old body. :)
The judge was so so amazing. She made sure to let the Cowdrey’s know that this was their day and they shouldn’t feel bad if anyone needed to get up and move around or be noisy. However, it was still very official and beautiful. She held a very respectful court.
Swearing everyone in.
The Advocates speaking on Abby’s behalf. The beauty of these words melted my heart.
Micah attempting to say something. :) The judge was so good at differing to the next person she needed to hear from and promising he would have his turn soon.
When he got his turn, he made the room light up with laughter and tears. He promised he wouldn’t ever hurt his little sister (under oath!). That one has been recorded, mom and dad! Keep it handy!
There was so much laughter and a lot of real tears. So much joy and wholeness!
Something that stirs in my heart was the expressions on Season’s face. My sweet friend. She was made for this. I love photos because sometimes, you can just sit in a minute and ponder on what she’s gone through. Her dreams and desires. She prays diligently and hears from the Lord. She trusts Him and has full hope in Him. She tells the story of going home from the hospital so often in tears, sobbing prayers to the Lord for Abby. One day, she heard Him say to her, “Abby is going to be fine.” She felt His peace that day and knew Abby would be theirs. And in this moment, on adoption day, she was asked if she had anything to share. She usually has words to speak. When the judge gave her a turn, she could barely get the words out. Her heart was bursting. Taking it all in. Such beauty could not be found in all the land.
Abby had no clue what was going on in that room. She was well occupied with her cup and snacks. But one day, she’ll see. She’ll see she is loved, prayed for, fought for and picked to be the most special. Chosen. Wanted. Just like how God sees us. I can barely wrap my mind around it.
You can see it in her eyes. Just look.
I was in heaving hearing each of the family members speak about their love for this baby girl. Ashton and Ayla were such joys with their sweet and simple words. Brian’s heart was visibly on fire. He loves big and leads his family in such an amazing way. He even taught his kids a team song for their family… which would soon be sung by the 4 year old in the court of law! :) Well done, Brian, well done.
I loved that sign above this family. All the smiles.
They pronounced Abby with her new official name, Abby Rae Cowdrey, and the room went wild. Micah was apparently inspired. Well mannered, with his arm raised high, he announced he had one last thing to say. He began singing the Cowdrey chant, something to the effect of “We are the Cowdrey’s! The mighty mighty Cowdrey’s!…”
The cherry on top! :)
Everyone wanted a picture with the judge and even got to join her up in her chair. Abby reached out for her and got to meet her too. :) It was pretty darling.
Abby was always meant for this family. Each of their sweet kids fits perfectly in this puzzle. They are the Mighty, Mighty Cowdrey’s. :)
